EMFS: Repurposing SMTP and IMAP for Data Storage and Synchronization
نویسنده
چکیده
Cloud storage has become a massive and lucrative business, with companies like Apple, Microsoft, Google, and Dropbox providing hundreds of millions of clients with synchronized and redundant storage. These services often command price-to-storage ratios significantly higher than the market rate for physical storage, as well as increase the surface area for data leakage. In place of this consumer-unfriendly status quo, I propose using widely available, well standardized email protocols like SMTP and IMAP in conjunction with free email service providers to store, synchronize, and share files across discrete systems. 1 ar X iv :1 60 2. 00 61 5v 1 [ cs .N I] 2 9 Ja n 20 16

Relations Between In- and Outbound Email Traffic
In this paper we will analyze the relations between outbound email and inbound email traffic. We consider outbound traffic being sending email using the SMTP and inbound traffic being receiving or retrieving email using POP or IMAP. IMAP appears to be less used than POP. In corporate networks it is likely to have more SMTP than POP/IMAP traffic and in residential networks the situation is rever...
متن کاملMy home is my post-office: evaluation of a decentralized email architecture on internet-of-things low-end device
Users predominantly access their email via mobile devices. This presents a two-fold challenge to the email applications. First, email’s update from multiple devices has to be eventually reconciled with the server. Prioritization of updates is difficult and maybe undesirable. Solving this problem requires a data store with the complete history of email changes. Second, legacy email protocols don...
متن کاملTripletMail: Replicated E-Mail Storage
We describe TripletMail, a system for outsourcing e-mail backups. The typical corporate mail server that handles receiving, sending and storing e-mails is replaced by two components: A mail server for SMTP/IMAP and a storage system which maintains several encrypted copies of each e-mail in racks of inexpensive servers. In this thesis, we focus on two problems of the storage system: In inexpensi...
متن کاملToward an Automated Vulnerability Comparison of Open Source IMAP Servers (Awarded Best Student Paper!)
The attack surface concept provides a means of discussing the susceptibility of software to as-yet-unknown attacks. A system’s attack surface encompasses the methods the system makes available to an attacker, and the system resources which can be used to further an attack. A measurement of the size of the attack surface could be used to compare the security of multiple systems which perform the...
متن کاملSpamato Revolutions - Mail Proxy for Spamato Spam Filter
In this thesis we present the Spamato Mail Proxy. Spamato is a collaborative spam filter system that acts as a stand alone component offering interfaces for mail clients and for spam filters. The Spamato Mail Proxy’s task is to allow for the connection of arbitrary mail clients to the spam filter system. Today’s email clients retrieve mails either through POP or IMAP. Therefore, the Spamato Mai...
